Hugh DICKSON, Sorting it all Out

by admin on June 5th, 2004

Recent discoveries have led me to the belief that there were probably 4 (maybe 5) Hugh DICKONS living in Dickson County prior to 1820. Two were adults and the descendents have been placed incorrectly. This has resulted in much confusion and I would welcom help in sorting them all out. o?¬≠ne thing is for sure…the Hugh DICKSON who bought land from David WILSON in 1803 and from whom many Dickson Co. residents descend is NOT the son of Joseph DICKSON

The four Hugh DICKSONs who I believed lived in Dickson Co. prior to 1820 were:Hugh DICKSON b. ca. 1770-1774 in Duplin Co. NC. Arrived TN ca., 1802 and signed the petition to form the new county as Hugh DICKSON, Sr.  He was not a son Joseph DICKSON. His wife's name is unknown. He bought 150 acres of land from David WILSON in 1803. He is found in the Dickson Co. Census in 1820, 1830 and 1840. He died ca. 1847/1848. He never left Dickson Co. He was probably the son of James DICKSON, Sr. from Du;lin Co. NC thus Joseph's nephew. Four sons and four daughters have been identified but most references including dctn.com show his children under the Hugh DICKSON listed next. Hugh DICKSON b. ca. 1780 was a son of Joseph DICKSON. He married Hannah HICKS and is found in the 1820 Dickson Co. census. However, He moved to Franklin Co. AL. and is found there in 1830 & 1840. His wife Hannah is shown thre in 1850 & 1860. His children are yet to be determined. This Hugh DICKSON died ca. 1843 in AL. Hannah applied for Bounty land for his service in the War of 1812 under Capt. Michael MOLTON. Hugh DICKSON b. ca. 1804 was a son of James DICKSON who moved to Perry Co. TN from Dickson Co. before 1820. I suspect that his father, James, was also a son of James DICKSON, Sr. of Duplin Co. NC.  James DICKSON sold his farm on Bear Creek to Ehpram ELLIS ca. 1820.  I understand he had already moved to Perry Co. by that time.Hugh DICKSON, (no dates). This Hugh DICKSON was a son of John DICKSON, Sr. who died ca. 1827 in Dickson Co. He is mentioned in the estate records of John found at the archives in Charlotte. John DICKSON is also found in the 1820 census of Dickson Co. I believe him to be another son of James DICKSON, Sr.  Other children of John DICKSON who died ca. 1827 were Robert, Joseph, James W., Adam, John, and Jane (m. Tharp ELLIS). Hugh DICKSON (this is the 5th one, no dates) Jospeh's son, Michael DICKSON, also named a son Hugh. It is likely he lived in Dickson Co. at the same time as the others but I'm not sure when Michael left.I believe James DICKSON, Sr. had four sons who came to TN perhaps most with their uncle Joseph DICKSON. They were Hugh DICKSON who lived on Dry Branch, James DICKSON, Jr. who moved to Perry Co., John DICKSON, Sr. who died in Dickson Co. ca. 1827, Alexander DICKSON who lived on Yellow Creek and Elizabeth DICKSON who is mentioned in Joseph's will as being his niece and a daughter of his brother, James DICKSON. Anybody wanting to help me sort these all out would be welcome. rbj485@bellsouth.net Russ James of Houston Co. TN
